Lasik vision correction and surgery

What is Lasik Vision Surgery?

By Mike Spector • Category: Lasik Vision Information

lasik-vision-procedureLasik vision correction is an outpatient procedure which will make a permanent change to the shape of the cornea. This is done to adjust your vision, in the hope to eliminate the need for corrective lenses.  In effect, your cornea itself becomes the corrective lens (in simple terms).

LASIK stands for Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis.  Either a mechanical blade or a laser is used to cut around the cornea, leaving one side of it still connected.  This allows the surgeon to fold the flap over, giving access to the mid-section of the cornea, also known as the storma.

Another laser is then used to send out pulses that vaporize parts of the stroma.  How much and exactly where these portions are removed is a very precise process.  Once the storma modification is completed, the flap in the cornea is replaced.  It will quickly heal itself.

There usually is only minor discomfort after the surgery.  Most describe it as an unpleasant feeling like there’s sand in your eyes.  Doctors will typically prescribe a mild pain reliever.
