5 Questions To Ask Your Lasik Surgeon

question_leadLasik vision surgery can be a bit deceiving in its complexity.  There are so many people having the process done without any complications, it can seem as though it’s a risk free surgery.  While that’s almost correct, there is always a risk involved.  Since this is your eyesight we’re working with, you don’t want to take any unnecessary chances.

Do not sign a contract for surgery until you’ve had a fair chance to pick your doctors brain and have all of your questions answered. Just because they’ve been to medical school and they’re wearing a lab coat, they still have to answer to you.  You’re the decision maker and nothing happens until you’re happy with all the answers.

Am I a good candidate for lasik vision correction? Even though you may seem to be in perfect health, there are some issues you may have overlooked that could rule out lasik surgery, at least for now.  If you’ve had any issues with your eyesight in the past few years, you’ll doctor will need to know.  Pregnancy may be another item that causes you to put off the surgery.  Make sure you disclose any medical items.

Are there any extras I’m going to need to pay for in addition to the main fee? Some doctors try to give you an amazingly low price up front and then add on all sorts of these extras after you’ve already signed an agreement. After about this early and don’t settle for the answer unless it’s very clearly spelled out for you.

How is the procedure done?  Seems like a simple question, but you should know and understand what is happening.  You’re mostly likely going to be wide awake during the process and you don’t want to start worrying when they do something normal which you didn’t expect.

What happens to me and my eyes after the surgery? This is a tough question to answer with much accuracy, so give your doctor a little slack.  But, make sure you know what you SHOULDN’T expect.  That way you’ll know right away if something isn’t normal.  That’s what could cause a problem for you.

How much time will I need to take off of work?  Of course, depending on your job, this may be more or less than the norm.  Fighter pilots will probably want to wait a little longer than a window washer.  You’ll also want to find out about operating any machinery, including your car. Don’t try to stretch the rules.  If you’re doctor tells you not to drive and you do, you could be putting yourself into all sorts of legal jeopardy.

Most doctors are very eager to answer all of your questions and they understand your concerns.  The more comfortable you are going into your lasik surgery, the more likely you’ll be a very satisfied customer afterwards.  Some doctors will have a pre-printed brochure that answers these questions.  Don’t sign anything until you’ve had a chance to review everything.
